PCL has been designing and manufacturing compressed air products and tyre inflation equipment for over 85 years, and today continues to pursue innovative solutions to meet customers needs in this ever-changing world.
Here's a glimpse into a past that we are incredibly proud of
Pneumatic Components Ltd (PCL) was founded in Sheffield - 'the home of engineering excellence' on the 25th June 1938 by Henry Turner and Thomas Brown.
In 1939, PCL began to supply the Air Ministry, beginning PCL’s contribution to the defence of the country over the next six years.
PCL's Vertex Air Line Gauge (MK2), the antecedent of the current MK4 Tyre Inflators, went into production.
After the war ended, PCL moved to its new premises on Eyre Street in Sheffield after staff numbers considerable increased from the 6 employees when the company began.
PCL’s original air line coupling and tyre pressure gauge friction device were patented.
The 1956 catalogue announced a range of new products including the Presetair, Reelair and PCL MK2 Air Meter.
The MK3 Air Line Gauge, Wall Meter and Pavement Gauge were introduced. The redesigned products met new harmonised European standards.
PCL moved its operations entirely to Holbrook Rise. The last product produced at Eyre Street was the MK2 Air Line Gauge.
PCL Air Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd was established and HORN GmbH & Co. KG (HORN TECALEMIT) acquired all the shares of PCL.
The AIRFORCE MK4 Tyre Inflator was launched, an upgrade of the popular linear-style hand inflator, bringing enlarged viewing window and other improvements. The following year, PCL introduced the first ACCURA MK4 to the family.
PCL celebrated 80 years of success. Today, PCL’s products are sold in over 100 countries and it still designs and manufactures from its 12,000m2 production facilities in Sheffield.
2018 was an award-studded year for PCL, thanks to products like the FireCart, PCL won the Tyresafe Innovation, the Sir Moir Lockhead Safety and Auto Trade’s Tyre Equipment Innovation Awards.
2020 was a challenging year for many. PCL’s dedicated team adapted to new ways of working, enabling continued support for key sectors who remained open for essential work. PCL continued to innovate with the launch of the new blue band couplings and developed the new website to further support PCL partners and customers.
