There’s a few places that you may find your vehicles recommended tyre pressure:

  • On the drivers (or passengers) door
  • Inside the fuel cap
  • In your vehicle handbook
  • Inside the glove box

Normally there are two tyre pressures quoted; one for “partial load” and a higher pressure for full load. Your vehicle manufacturer may also specify different tyre pressure for your front and rear tyres. Make sure to adjust your tyre pressures accordingly.

It is also important to remember that tyre pressures are quoted for cold tyres, so you should wait until your tyres are cool before checking.

Never use the tyre pressure quoted on the tyre sidewall. This pressure refers to the maximum inflation pressure a tyre can contain under maximum load. Overinflating tyres is dangerous as affects the vehicle’s handling and braking capabilities. The reduced contact area with the road accelerates wear on the tread centre, means tyres will need replacing more quickly.

The easiest way to check your tyre pressure is to use a tyre pressure gauge. Most forecourts will have an air tower that can be used to check and inflate/deflate your tyres to the correct pressure, however you can also buy a tyre pressure gauge to keep at home.

You should be checking your tyre pressure, tread and condition at least once a month and before long journeys. To find out more on how to check your tyre pressure, read our handy guide.
